Saturday, June 13, 2026, approximately 15 volunteers, including Middlebury Beautification Committee members and members of the public, installed a landscape of red, white, and blue plantings designed to complement the Rochambeau Plaza and reflect the French-American heritage commemorated by the memorial. Before work began, Chairman P.J. Hopson provided an orientation on plant locations, color selection, and the reasons behind certain choices, including the use of pollinator-friendly species and the avoidance of plants harmful to bees and other wildlife. Volunteers were organized into teams of two or three, each including at least one experienced participant, and received instruction on proper planting depth and the use of fertilizer and water-retaining beads to promote healthy plant establishment.
