Middlebury Police, working with the Connecticut State Police and other law enforcement officials, on Wednesday, September 3, at least temporarily shut down Ruby Aroma Spa at 2016 Straits Turnpike (formerly occupied by Snyder Pools). More details on the operation are expected September 4, but our understanding at this time is that one or more undercover officers visited the spa for a massage, and the staff allegedly offered to perform sexual acts on or for them. Two staff members were then arrested.

The police department then proceeded to obtain search warrants and were in the process of conducting a search sometime around or after 5 p.m.

The spa had been discussed publicly for the first time at the Tuesday, September 2, Board of Selectmen meeting when a letter from an anonymous sender was read. The letter said, “I am a concerned resident of Middlebury. I cannot believe that you allow a business like this to open in our town of Middlebury. It’s absolutely disgusting! I think it should be closed IMMEDIATELY!”

The sender enclosed a printout of the spa’s website, the contents of which we expect many would find extremely offensive. It does not contain sexually explicit photos, but it does describe the employees as “Sweet and Hot Asian Staff” and shows photos of mostly large-busted women in provocative poses.

Provided the police have had time to document today’s actions, more details will be published tomorrow.

UPDATED 09-04-2025 to correct the name of the spa.
