Frederick S. King, 81, of Middlebury passed away peacefully Thursday, April 1, 2021 at St. Mary’s Hospital Hospice VITAS Innovative Care unit. He was the loving husband to the late Joan Adele (Moritis) King for 53 years.
Fred was born in Winsted, Connecticut, on July 12, 1939, son of the late Frederick Elmer and Estella (Clark) King. He was a longtime Middlebury resident and received his master’s degree from Post College. He retired from the state of Connecticut and worked in the finance department at Bullard Haven Technical School in Bridgeport for many years. Fred enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, gardening, and softball, but his true passion was fishing. He was also an active committee member and treasurer in Boy Scout Troop 5 in Middlebury, where both of his sons attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army who had been stationed in Berlin, Germany.
He is survived by his sons, Frederick J. King II and his wife, Katherine, of Alexandria, Virginia, and Jared A. King of Salisbury, New Hampshire; his three grandsons, Adam, A.J., and Noah; his sisters, Shirley Annelli of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and Lois Van Wagner of Watertown. Fred was predeceased by his sisters Mae Elizabeth and Alice.
His funeral will be Friday April 9, 2021, at 10 a.m. from the Naugatuck Valley Memorial / Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home at 240 N. Main St. in Naugatuck to St. John of the Cross Church in Middlebury for a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Burial with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury.
Visitation will be held Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Facial coverings and social distancing guidelines are required at the services.
