Bee hopes to fill the void

#MiddleburyCT #Newspaper

On November 4, 2026, “Voices” newspaper announced it was ceasing print publication effective that day. Readers in its 11-town readership area were devastated.

We were devastated, too. The loss of any small-town local news provider is a tragedy. It creates what is called a “news desert,” an area where residents have no access to local news – news about the things that matter most to them as they go about their daily lives.

Since we tend to believe in dreaming the impossible dream – and making it come true – we hope to provide the local news that has suddenly gone missing. This is a gigantic step for us that means increasing our ad revenue and/or finding other revenue streams to support what now needs to be done to achieve our goals.

We posted the following message on Facebook’s Southbury Community page and share it here with a note that anyone with newspaper experience who’d like to help with this effort can contact us at beeintelligencer@gmail.com.

Dear Southbury neighbors, the loss of the print version of “Voices” is a modern-day tragedy that really hit home with me since I’ve been publishing the Middlebury Bee-Intelligencer for more than 20 years. I don’t want to see Southbury folks living in a local news desert, so I am looking at options to help me ensure that doesn’t happen.

Starting with the December issue, I will increase Southbury coverage in the Bee-Intelligencer. To do this, I need your help in the form of press releases about December events. And, to cover the cost of additional pages, I need ads from businesses wanting to reach Southbury customers.

Submissions for the December issue need to be in by Tuesday, November 17, 2026. Press releases go to mbisubmit@gmail.com. Ads and advertising questions go to mbiadvertising@gmail.com.

Over the following months, I will firm up long range plans to deliver the local news you want. You can help me plan by letting me know what matters to you. Do this either by email to mbisubmit@gmail.com or by snail mail to Middlebury Bee-Intelligencer, P.O. Box 10, Middlebury, CT 06762.

Thanks for your help.
