Avid golfer, skier and dog trainer

James Clark Hurlbut, 93, of Middlebury, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 2, 2023, at Waterbury Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Ellen (Tooker) Hurlbut.

James was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 23, 1929, son of the late James Walter and Ruth Langdon (Clark) Hurlbut. He was a 1947 graduate of Crosby High School and earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Bentley College. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Before his retirement, James worked as a heavy equipment salesman for many local businesses.

For many years, he was active with the Middlebury Little League as a coach and vice president and with the Middlebury Youth Basketball as a coach and president as well as a member of the Middlebury Republican Town Committee. He also ran the Youth Ski Racing Program at Tapawingo Ski Area for many years. He was a member of the Middlebury Lions for decades and was an active member of the Middlebury Congregational Church. He also served as a justice of the peace. James was the past president of the Obedience Dog Training Club of Waterbury. He had a passion for dogs, golf, skiing and the NY Yankees.

James leaves to honor and cherish his memory his children, David C. Hurlbut and his wife, Penny, of Bristol, Connecticut; Stephen T. Hurlbut and his wife, Sharon, of Naugatuck, Connecticut; and Nancy Eisenman-Kales and her husband Brett of Middlebury, Connecticut. He also leaves five step-grandchildren, including Rick Skinner Jr. and Carrie Skinner and three step-great-grandchildren.

A calling hour for James will be held on Monday, September 11, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Brookside Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home at 200 Benson Road in Middlebury. His funeral service will follow the calling hour at the Middlebury Congregational Church at 1242 Whittemore Road in Middlebury at 11:30 a.m. Burial with full military honors will follow the service at Lake Elise Cemetery in Middlebury.
