Lover of life, friends and family

Vincent McDonald, 78, of Middlebury, passed away unexpectedly at Waterbury Hospital on Saturday, October 2, 2021.

Vince was born in Waterbury on July 6, 1943, son of the late Francis and Margaret (Kelly) McDonald and the youngest of eight children. He graduated from McTernan Grammar School and Crosby High School (Class of 1961), and during high school met the love of his life, the late Barbara Ann (Brucato) McDonald. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Fairfield University in 1966 and shortly thereafter served two years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Berchtesgaden, Germany, where he and Barbara were married in 1967.

Vince started his career with IBM in 1968 and quickly discovered that he was a natural salesman. He threw caution to the wind and struck out on his own in 1985, starting New England Systems Inc (NSI), where he served as CEO, and more recently as chairman, until his passing. Vince’s real gift was his infectious enthusiasm for life and his ability to make personal connections with friends and family … or even the check-out person at Costco. Vince loved to grab a moment with both hands and then make everyone a part of it, oftentimes with an unexpected act of kindness or an entertaining, perhaps slightly inappropriate, story. With his sense of humor and open heart, he truly brought the life to the party.

Vince was one of a kind and will never be forgotten, but forever remembered and missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. He is survived by his sons, Thomas A. McDonald and his wife, Julie, of Middlebury, Connecticut, and Todd V. McDonald and his wife, Lisa, of Larchmont, New York; and his daughter, Tracey Zdziarski and her husband, Andrew, of Southfield, Massachusetts; and his beloved eight grandchildren, Annie, Kate, and Will McDonald; Mac and Ben Zdziarski; Anna Sofia, Nicholas and Charlie McDonald. He is survived by his brother, John McDonald of Middlebury; a sister, Julie McDonald of Arlington, Massachusetts; and he was predeceased by his brothers Francis, Thomas, Daniel, James and Paul McDonald.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 12 p.m. at the Lake Quassapaug Outing Club (aka McDonald’s Beach) at 2328 Middlebury Road in Middlebury, where the family welcomes you to share stories and share laughs about Vince’s life.
