Loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend

Mrs. Beverly (Sandbach) Heminway, 89, of Middlebury, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home on February 15, 2021. She was the widow of Andrew Reid Heminway.

Bev was born in Hamden, Connecticut, on September 16, 1931, the daughter of the late Wilmer and Helen (Lewis) Sandbach. She graduated from Chaffee High School Class of 1949 and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Connecticut College in 1953. Bev married the love of her life, Andy Heminway, in 1954 whereupon they settled in Middlebury, Connecticut, to raise their three children. After their children were grown, Bev went to work for H & R Block and eventually become an enrolled agent for the I.R.S. She opened her own tax business in Watertown, Connecticut and retired in 2011.

Bev enjoyed tennis; puzzles of all kinds (including taxes!); joining in on the unpredictable antics of her late husband, Andy; relaxing by the pool with good friends and the warm love of her family. She was an avid bridge player who adored dogs, croquet, theatre, classical music and whistling. Bev had a wonderful sense of humor and she loved to laugh. Bev was a charm and an anchor. She will be missed.

To honor and cherish her memory she leaves her children, Katherine Heminway and her wife, Lori Spielman, of Ellington, Connecticut; Molly H. Moseley and her husband, Charles, of Weston, Connecticut; and Merrit A. Heminway and his wife, Joan, of Knoxville, Tennessee. In addition, she leaves seven grandchildren, Sara Halprin, Scott Heminway, Benjamin Griesbach, Charley Moseley, Hannah Griesbach, Maxwell Moseley, and Kate Heminway, as well as three great-grandchildren, Ellington, Hunter and Henley Halprin. She also leaves a devoted aide, Dawn Hinds.

A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family at Evergreen Cemetery in Watertown. There are no calling hours. Brookside Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Middlebury has been entrusted with the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Bev’s memory to The Brass City Rescue Alliance, 2 Service Road, Middlebury CT 06762 (brasscityrescue.org), an animal shelter where Bev discovered two of her most beloved companions, Copper and Cassa.
