Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather

Dr. Robert A. Gagne of Middlebury passed after a full life on January 24, 2021, at Bristol Hospital.

He was the husband of Audrey Nault Gagne for 63 years and was predeceased by her in 2017. Robert was born February 19, 1931, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Connecticut, the elder son of the late Lucie (Chevrette) and Albert J. Gagne. He was a graduate of Crosby High School. He received his bachelor’s degree from The University of Maryland and a doctor of dental surgery degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, Dental School, University of Maryland.

He did his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital and was an attending for a combined 45 years of dedicated service. He also was on staff at Waterbury Hospital all these years. He volunteered in the dental clinics at both hospitals. He was a captain in the Air Force Dental Corps and served on air rescue as an air escort for dental patients.

Dr. Gagne practiced dentistry on Highland Ave for 45 years. In 2000, he sold the practice to his son, Dr. John R Gagne, and continued to practice until his retirement in 2003 after doing what he wanted to do his entire life. He was president of the Dental Society of Greater Waterbury, received their distinguished service award and was chair of the financial trustees committee for 16 years. He was a member of the American Dental Association and the Connecticut State Dental Association, where he was a delegate for 10+ years and served on many committees.

Dr. Gagne was a parishioner at St. John of the Cross in Middlebury for 55 years and served on their parish council as well as financial committee for years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the May Fund Committee at St. Mary’s Hospital as well as the fundraising committee for Holy Cross High School. He was an avid golfer as a member of The Country Club of Waterbury for almost 50 years. Many years of golf also were enjoyed at the Sea Pines Country Club on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He also was an avid skier with over 35 season passes at Okemo Mountain in Vermont

Besides his wife, he leaves two children, a daughter, Mrs. Michele G. Kinner and her husband, Stephen G. Kinner Jr., of Greenwich Connecticut, and a son, Dr. John R. Gagne and his wife, Susan M. Gagne, of Watertown, Connecticut. He leaves two grandsons, Ryan C. Kinner and his wife, Kirstyn, and Christopher G. Kinner and his wife, Elizabeth, as well as a great-granddaughter, Diana May Kinner.

Dr. Gagne is predeceased by his younger brothers, Charles E. Gagne of Norwich, Connecticut and Fr Arthur J. Gagne of Corpus Christi, Texas and his older sister, Roma G. Massicotte of Waterbury, a long time RN at St. Mary’s Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial with cremains present will be held Thursday, January 28, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Saint John of the Cross Church in Middlebury. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow at Lake Elise Cemetery in Middlebury. There are no calling hours. Brookside Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home and Crematory at 200 Benson Road in Middlebury has been entrusted with the arrangements.
