Referendum on budgets Wednesday, May 8

Voters in Middlebury will vote on the proposed 2019-2020 budgets for the town and for Regional School District 15 Wednesday, May 8, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Shephardson Community Center at 1172 Whittemore Road in Middlebury.

Southbury voters also will vote on their town’s budget and the school budget. They will vote at the Southbury Firehouse at 461 Main St. S. in Southbury.

The two questions on the Middlebury ballot will be:

Question 1: “Shall the 2019-2020 proposed Town of Middlebury Municipal Budget in the amount of $11,242,315 be approved?” ___Yes ___ No

Question 2: “Shall the proposed 2019-2020 Budget of the Pomperaug Regional School District #15 in the amount of $70,814,867 be adopted?” ___Yes ___ No

Copies of the budgets are on file and open to public inspection in the Middlebury town clerk’s office at 1212 Whittemore Road in Middlebury.

If both budgets are approved, Middlebury’s mil rate is expected to rise to 33.40 from its current 32.51, a 2.7-percent increase.

Absentee ballots are available in the Middlebury Town Clerk’s office for the May 8, 2019 Budget Referendum. Electors and property owners owning property assessed at $1,000 or more on the last completed grand list are eligible to vote. They must also be a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old.

An application must be filled out before a ballot can be issued. Ballots will not be mailed. The applications are available at the Town Clerk’s office or can be downloaded from the Secretary of the State’s website at www.sots.ct.gov under Elections & Voting, then to Voter Information, then to Can I vote by absentee ballot, then to Referendum with less than 3 weeks notice.
