Closing

The Middlebury Senior Center will be closed Monday, May 28, in observance of Memorial Day.

Help with the garden

Volunteers who can spare an hour a week are need to help with the Senior Center’s community garden. The Bernardi family – mom, Jaime, and kids Angelina, Olivia and Joey – prepared the raised garden beds. Now volunteers are needed to plant vegetables and flowers and keep up with the weeding. Driver safety program

The next AARP Driver Safety Course will be Monday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the senior center. The course is the nation’s first and largest driver-refresher course.
Drivers who attend the class will receive a completion certificate and may be entitled to a discount on automobile insurance (contact your insurance company for details).
AARP membership is not required, and drivers of all ages are invited to attend. The cost to participate is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. All checks must be made out to “AARP.” Call 203-577-4166 to register.

Chiropractic evaluation

Trevor Sykes from Sykes Family Chiropractic will be at the Senior Center Tuesday, May 8, at 10 a.m. to do free one-on-one posture evaluations and answer any health questions you may have. Reservations are a must. Call 203-577-4166 for an appointment.

Hollywood film and talk

Thursday, May 10, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., Tom Rosa will show and discuss the movie, “Bloodhounds of Broadway” starring Mitzi Gaynor, Scott Brady, Mitzi Green, Marguerite Chapman and Michael O’Shea. Hustlers, mobsters, showgirls and show tunes unite in this Damon Runyon Tale about a gambler who bets on love. Filled with laughs and romance, lively production numbers and spry tunes, this movie is a musical treat.
Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Financial abuse seminar

Webster Bank will present a free seminar, “How to Prevent Financial Abuse,” Thursday, May 17, at 10 a.m. From travel scams and phony lotteries to false promises, seniors are often targets of financial fraud and abuse. Lunch and learn

Thursday, May 17, at 11:30 a.m. Cindy Hamel from the Lutheran Home of Southbury will present “Walk in My Shoes,” a program involving role play to bring a better understanding of individuals with disabilities, both seen and unseen, who we encounter in everyday life. Prevent bone fractures

Wednesday, May 23, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., learn how to avoid the most serious risks of osteoporosis, This free event brings insight on how medical conditions, medications, and family history can affect your risk for fractures. Register by calling 203-577-4166. Drop-ins are welcome.

New Tai Chi class

A new Tai Chi class started this week. Led by Gary Welton, it meets Wednesdays, at 8 a.m. The class will meet a total of 10 Wednesdays, and the cost will be $25 for the 10 classes. Please sign up by calling the Senior center at 203-577-4166.

Commission on Aging meeting

The next Commission on Aging meeting will be Tuesday, June 19, at 9:30 a.m. All who are interested are welcome to attend.
