Call on abandoned vehicle leads police to arrests

Middlebury Police Chief James Viadero said Officer Ed Demers was sent to the area of Routes 64 and 188 Monday night, Sept. 21, at about 8 p.m. to investigate a report of a vehicle left abandoned in a hazardous condition. Demers found an unregistered older model Volkswagen but was unable to obtain information on the vehicle.

Several callers said two young black males were observed leaving the vehicle and walking east on Route 64. A short time later, several calls were received about two suspicious black males checking cars in driveways in the area of Tyler Crossing. A check of that area was made with no results, but two suspects fitting the description were located farther down Middlebury Road near Sullivan Jewelers.

Both suspects were detained, and it was determined that one suspect had 11 warrants for his arrest issued out of the City Of Waterbury. The second suspect, a juvenile, had no criminal history. Upon investigating further it was determined that the Volkswagen, which Officer Demers had had towed, was stolen out of Waterbury and the two suspects had been operating the vehicle.

Both suspects were transported back to the Middlebury Police Department for processing.

The adult suspect, Lequaan Allen, 20, of Waterbury was charged with third-degree larceny, criminal trespass and criminal attempt to commit larceny and was  transported to Waterbury for processing on the 11 outstanding warrants with a total bond of $550,000. It also was determined Allen was on probation and was wearing a GPS monitoring device.

The second suspect, a juvenile,  was charged with third-degree larceny, criminal attempt at larceny and criminal trespass. He was subsequently processed and transported to the Bridgeport Juvenile Facility and detained.
