Unanimous approval given to land sale

Voters at the Middlebury Special Town Meeting June 1 unanimously approved the sale of 33± acres to Raymond and Penny Albini, owners of Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Funeral Home in Waterbury, for the sum of $200,000, the property’s appraised value. The land on Benson Road was acquired by the town in lieu of taxes owed by the former owner, Baker Residential Properties, builders of the Brookside subdivision. Those taxes were about $75,000. The Albinis, who are Middlebury residents, said they hope to build a crematory and associated structures such as a cremation cemetery on the land.

Ninety-one people filed into the Shepardson Community Center Auditorium for the special town meeting. Of those attending, 79 voted “yes” for the land sale. No one voted against it. Some who attended the meeting did not qualify to vote for one reason or another.
