Illustration 1 shows a circle with a 3-mile long radius within which sit five sources of air pollution: Interstate 84, the Towantic Power Plant, Oxford Airport, an Algonquin natural gas compressor station, and a proposed warehouse complex named Southford Park. Also within that circle are Long Meadow Elementary School and Pomperaug High School.
Middlebury resident Ray Pietrorazio and pulmonologist Dr. David G. Hill will present a free program on cumulative air pollution in Middlebury Thursday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in the Shepardson Community Center Auditorium at 1172 Whittemore Road in Middlebury.
Pietrorazio, a licensed combustion specialist, and the town’s appointed air quality representative, will present a 20-minute overview of concerns regarding the combined effect of multiple pollution sources affecting the community. These include Interstate 84, the CPV Towantic Energy Center, Waterbury/Oxford Airport, an Algonquin natural gas compressor station, and a proposed warehouse complex at Southford Park.
Dr. Hill – a pulmonologist with Waterbury Pulmonary Associates and the National Board Chairperson of the American Lung Association — will participate in the question-and-answer session that follows.

Connecticut DEEP officials confirmed at a March 20 meeting that a regulatory gap exists and that addressing it would require legislative action. The meeting is open to the public.
