The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced an extended detour will be implemented at the South Street bridge (Bridge No.01164) in Middlebury starting Monday, March 2, 2026. The bridge will be closed for structural repairs and bridge deck replacement for 1.5 years with expected completion of the project by Friday, September 10, 2027. The South Street bridge passes over I-84.
While the bridge is closed, traffic will be detoured by way of Route 188 and Long Meadow Road. Traffic signage will guide motorists through the detour, and the bridge will not be passable during this time.
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this area.
The contract for this project, CTDOT Project No. 0080-0132, was awarded on December 29, 2025, to Rotha Contracting Company Inc. at a cost of $9.6 million. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 4 in Thomaston.
