Provided the weather allows it, a Household Hazardous Waste and Paint Collection Day will be held Saturday, September 26, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ansonia Transfer Station at 1 N. Division St. in Ansonia, Conn. This will be the last event of 2026. If the event is canceled, notice will be posted on the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments website, nvcogct.gov/hhw, late Thursday, September 24, 2026.
The collection is free to residents of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethlehem, Derby, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Oxford, Prospect, Seymour, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Watertown, Wolcott and Woodbury. There is no charge to residents. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license, tax bill, or other identification, is required for entry. There is no need to line up before 9 a.m.
Each vehicle may bring up to 50 lbs. of residential waste. Participants are asked to first see if their town will accept the material. Materials from a commercial business or nonprofit will not be accepted. The event is sponsored by the Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments and participating towns.
Household hazardous wastes are wastes that are poisonous, flammable, or corrosive. They are harmful to human health and the environment if not disposed of properly. The goal of the program is to keep potentially hazardous waste out of local landfills and sewers, providing extra protection for wetlands and waterways. In addition, residents may bring latex (water-based) paint to the collection event. While not considered hazardous waste, latex paint will be accepted as part of a statewide paint product stewardship program.
Waste that will be accepted includes: oil- and latex-based paints and stains; thermometers and thermostats containing mercury; drain and oven cleaners; upholstery cleaners, wood cleaners, strippers and varnishes; pesticides and poisons; pool and photo chemicals; automotive cleaners and fluids (including gasoline and motor oil); grease and rust solvents; aerosol containers containing a chemical; and metal polishes.
Items that will not be accepted: tires, auto batteries, propane tanks exceeding 1 lb., compressed gas cylinders, asbestos, smoke detectors, explosives, radioactive or medical waste, grout, joint compound, lead paint chips, empty containers of any kind, and no food-grade aerosol containers or empty aerosols of any kind. Aerosol containers will not be accepted unless they contain a paint or chemical. Empty aerosols that contain food products can be recycled. Full or partially full food products and empty chemical and paint aerosol containers can be placed in the trash. The contractor reserves the right to reject additional materials.
A full list of acceptable and unacceptable materials can be found at nvcogct.gov/hhw. Residents should leave materials in the original container whenever possible. When arriving at the collection site, residents are asked to stay in their cars at all times. Trained waste handlers will remove materials from the cars.
