Save Historic Middlebury announced on August 17 that, after two years of monthly meetings and countless requests for guidance from experts, it had completed its Historic Properties Commission proposal. The proposal is posted on the SHM website and can be seen at shmiddlebury.wordpress.com/laws.
The following three next steps will be taken in an effort to get this new commission established:
- A public meeting to present the proposal in its entirety, answer questions from the public, and incorporate any germane feedback back into the proposal will be held Wednesday, August 26, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Shepardson Community Center Auditorium at 1172 Whittemore Road in Middlebury. Please spread the word and plan to attend. See the flyer for this event at the bottom of this article.
- People are being asked to submit letters of support for the proposed commission to the Middlebury Board of Selectmen. There is no cost to the town or taxpayers associated with formation of this new commission. A sample letter of support follows.

- On Tuesday September 8, at 5 p.m. in the Middlebury Town Hall Conference Room, the proposal for the new commission will be presented to the Middlebury Board of Selectmen. Supporters of the new commission are asked to attend this meeting and voice their support during public comments. The BoS is expected to vote on the matter at its Monday, October 5, meeting.
A huge thank you goes out to Michael Dooling, Peter Trinchero, Kara Collins, and others who were the “subcommittee” to get the proposal written. And a big thank you to the eight volunteers who have thrown their “hat in the ring” to be considered as commissioners. Finally, a very, very big thank you to Tom Rice for volunteering to have his home be the inaugural structure protected!!
