UPDATE: 12:22 p.m. Deputy Chief Ronald Hunt of the Middlebury Police Department issued the following statement:
The Middlebury Police Department responded to a motor vehicle collision that occurred on Middlebury Road involving a motor scooter and a pickup truck.
At approximately 00:31 hrs on 07/11/2026, officers responded to the area of 480 Middlebury Road for a reported collision. Upon arrival, officers determined that an eighteen-year-old male operator of a motor scooter had collided with a pickup truck.
The operator of the motor scooter sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Waterbury Hospital for emergency treatment. The operator later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured, remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
The Naugatuck Valley Collision Investigation Team responded and is conducting a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Middlebury Road was temporarily closed while officers processed the scene.
No further information is being released at this time due to the ongoing investigation.
UPDATE: 9:43 a.m. Chief Patrick Deely said preliminary information is that David W. Young, 18, of Middlebury was riding a motor scooter westbound when he collided with a pickup truck headed eastbound. Young was transported to Waterbury Hospital and was going to be airlifted to Yale New Haven. At some point, however, he passed away. We believe he recently graduated from Pomperaug High School.
The pickup truck driver was a man from New Hampshire who was working in Woodbury and was on his way home.
We will share the accident reconstruction team report as soon as we have it. We send our condolences to David’s family and friends at this sad time.
A serious accident involving what is believed to be a moped that was westbound and a pickup truck that was eastbound occurred around 1 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2026. in front of the Dunkin’ Donuts Plaza on Middlebury Road in Middlebury. An ambulance transported the moped driver to the hospital. Middlebury Police Chief Patrick Deely said the Naugatuck Valley Accident Reconstruction Team is working to determine how the accident happened. We expect to have further details on the accident and the drivers later this morning.
