Tuesday, June 16, 2026, the Middlebury Democratic Town Committee hosted a voter forum at which voters could ask questions of the selectman candidates — Casey Larkin and Selectman Brian Shaban — whose names will be on the June 23, 2026, election ballot. The event originally was to be a debate, but Shaban declined to participate.

He also had not agreed to participate in the voter forum, but he and a group of supporters entered the room shortly before it was scheduled to begin. Larkin immediately welcomed him to the event and, though Shaban initially said he didn’t intend to interrupt what he referred to as “your” event, both Larkin and this reporter/editor assured Shaban it was also his event since he had been invited from the start. Both welcomed him and encouraged him to participate, which he then did.

Neither the candidates nor the moderator had advance notice of the questions the candidates were asked. Attendees were invited to write down their questions as they arrived and to place them in a closed box. That box was then presented to the moderator, who drew questions from it.

About 20 minutes into the event, it became obvious the room reserved for it at Shepardson Community Center could not accommodate the number of folks attending, so the entire event then moved down the hall to the auditorium. That is why there are two videos. Part 1 was recorded in the smaller room. Part 2 was recorded in the auditorium
