Middlebury Police Chief Patrick Deely said what appears to be a homemade bomb was discovered in Avalon Farms Sunday afternoon, May 24, 2026. A concerned citizen noticed something burning in front of an Avalon Farms home and called Middlebury’s fire chief. The fire department and the fire marshal arrived and said it appeared to be a homemade bomb, so the area was secured, and the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad was called to the scene. They disarmed the object so it would be safe to handle, and then the state fire marshal broke it down into its components so local police could continue their investigation.

Chief Deely assures residents the area is safe and patrols will be increased. The incident took place on Avalon Farms Drive between Whitehall Court and Devon Court, likely between 2 and 3 p.m. Anyone who has any information about this incident or observed anything suspicious that may be related to it, whether in Avalon Farms or elsewhere, is asked to report it to the Middlebury Police Department by calling 203-577-4028.
