Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend
Eileen R. Ciarleglio, 94, of Middlebury peacefully entered the gates of heaven on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family at Vitas Inpatient Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was the widow of Ralph D. Ciarleglio Jr.
Eileen was born on May 2, 1930, a daughter of the late Clifford Shumway and Agnes (McKeon) Shumway. She spent her childhood in western Massachusetts. She graduated from Amherst High School in 1948 and The Sisters of Providence Nursing School in 1951. Eileen worked as a registered nurse for nearly four decades. She began her career at Providence Hospital in Holyoke, Massachusetts. After marrying Ralph, she moved to Waterbury, Conn., and worked at Waterbury Hospital. Later the couple moved to Middlebury, and Eileen continued nursing at Southbury Training School for 26 years. Even after her retirement, she continued nursing for multiple home health companies. Many benefited from Eileen’s attentive and compassionate care. When she wasn’t nursing, Eileen loved traveling, gardening, walking her beloved dogs, and spending many hours with her friends and family.
Eileen leaves behind her daughter, Susan M. Ubben of Woodbury, Conn.; two sons, James F. Ciarleglio of Middlebury, Conn., and Michael R. Ciarleglio and his wife, Ruth, of Alexander, N.C.; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends to cherish her memory. She is predeceased by her brothers, Harold Shakarian of Belchertown, Mass., Albert Shakarian of Woodbridge, N.J., and James Jackson of Amherst, Mass., and her sisters, Mary Vanasse of Chicopee, Mass.; Jennie McCullough of Belchertown, Mass.; Helen (Jackson) Simpsic of Hadley, Mass.; and Mary (Jackson) Dion of Windsor Locks, Conn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, May 2, at 10 a.m. at St. John of the Cross Church in Middlebury. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury, Conn.. A reception of remembrance will follow at Elenni’s Restaurant in Woodbury, Conn.
