Middlebury Police Chief Pat Deely said on May 20 that the 14-year-old female Memorial Middle School student who allegedly brought a loaded firearm to school on March 24 was served with a summons late Thursday, May 18, and appeared in juvenile court in Waterbury Friday, May 19. The student has been charged with firearm theft, possessing a weapon on school grounds, and carrying a pistol without a permit.

Deely said police had hoped to conduct another interview with the student Friday, but the attorney who now represents the student advised against it. Deely said earlier interviews indicated no criminal intent was involved in the incident. Instead, the student appears to have acted based on social media trends and a desire to appear to be “cool.”

Police are continuing to interview the adults involved in the incident before settling on charges against them. The adults have, so far, voluntarily turned over the weapons shown in the photo to the right, and also turned over an additional two rifles. The pistol allegedly brought to school is the black pistol on the bottom with the yellow padlock. It is a Taurus 9 mm pistol.

Deely said he believes the student has been suspended from school, but to check with Region 15 Superintendent of Schools Joshua Smith, which we will do Monday. He said the student was released to her father, but he didn’t have information on any conditions the court imposed on that release. We hope to obtain that information on Monday.

The investigation into the adults involved continues. Deely said it appears the courts will need to educate them on firearms laws and safety procedures.
