Two masked thieves stole a catalytic converter Tuesday, March 7, at about 2 p.m., from the parking lot of the office building at 984 Southford Road in Middlebury. A tenant in one of the offices there witnessed the theft and said one of the thieves waited in a car while the other jacked up the front end of a Honda Accord and stole the catalytic converter. The thieves were described as 17 to 20 years old.

The license plate on the thieves’ vehicle recorded by the witness came back as belonging to a different make and model car. A license plate one digit higher came back to a vehicle of the same make and model as that used by the thieves that is owned by two Southbury residents. Southbury police determined that vehicle was parked in the driveway of its Heritage Village owners, who have no criminal history and have no one in their teens or twenties living with them.

Pending further evidence, surveillance video or witnesses, the investigation is closed. Anyone who witnessed this crime or has information helpful to the police can contact the Middlebury Police Department by calling 911. Officer Daniel Gillotti is the investigating officer on this case.
