Wednesday, May 5, Middlebury voters can go to Shepardson Community Center at 1172 Whittemore Road in Middlebury from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. to cast their ballots in the annual budget referendum. Three questions will be on the ballot. They are.

  1. Shall the 2021-2022 proposed Town of Middlebury Municipal Budget in the amount of $11,919,736.24 be approved?
  2. Shall the proposed 2021-2022 Budget of the Pomperaug Regional School District #15 in the amount of $74,794,466 be adopted?
  3. Shall the Town of Middlebury appropriate $250,000 to Account 01-80-01-6092 (Capital Items from Unassigned Fund Balance) in the General Fund from Account 01-00-00-3707 (Unassigned Fund Balance) in the General Fund?

The proposed 2021-2022 Town budget is an increase of 3.2%, or $372,910, over the current budget, but the mil rate, provided both the town and Region 15 proposed 2021-2022 budgets are approved by voters, will drop three tenths of a mil, to 34.8 from the current 35.10. The current mil rate for Southbury is 29.3.

The Region 15 proposed 2021-2022 budget is an increase of 2.58%, or $3,959,599, over the current budget. However, due to changes in student enrollments for each of the towns, Middlebury’s increase will be $100,184, or a total of $25,002,444 compared to the current share of $25,902,260. This compares to Southbury’s increase of $1,784,508, as its share rises to $49,792,022 from $48,007,514.
