Loving wife, mother, and grandmother

Elaine (Steele) Sakocius, 80, of Middlebury passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at her daughter’s home on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019. She was the beloved wife of George A. Sakocius.

Elaine was born Dec. 16, 1938 in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Herbert and Nora (Pierson) Steele and was a lifelong Middlebury resident. She was a graduate of Waterbury Catholic High School. Prior to her retirement in 2013, Elaine was employed by Region 15 as a cafeteria worker and then as a general assistant, where she always treated the kids fairly with many of them referring to her as “Mom.” She was involved in both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts as a leader, and coached town baseball, softball and Little League. Her passion was to bake and decorate cakes for all occasions for family, friends and co-workers, always making them feel special. She also enjoyed flower arranging, ceramics and crocheting; making many beautiful gifts for family and friends over the years. She was a communicant of Saint John of the Cross Church.

Besides her husband of 57 years of Middlebury, she leaves four loving daughters, Cynthia Michalski and her husband, Jeff, of Fountain Hills, Ariz.; Sharon Machin and her husband, Hal, of Middlebury; Christine Sakocius of Naugatuck; Elaine Sakocius of Middlebury; and a son, George Sakocius. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Jason and Todd Michalski, Heather Sakocius, Amber and Katie Dickey, and Joshua and Nora Machin.

Her funeral will be Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, at 10 a.m. from Chase Parkway Memorial, The Albini Family Funeral Home at 430 Chase Parkway in Waterbury to Saint John of the Cross Church in Middlebury for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.  Burial and committal prayers will be held in the spring at Middlebury Cemetery.  Calling hours are today, Thursday, Jan. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m.
