MaryJean Pisani, 51, of Middlebury passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family after a long and valiant battle with breast cancer on Oct. 11, 2018. She was the loving wife of Giuseppe “Joe” Pisani for more than 32 years.

MaryJean was born May 15, 1967 in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Angelina (D’Aversa) Zappone.

In her brief time on this earth MaryJean was hardworking and prosperous. Beginning at a young age she assisted her father with his paving company, making grinders at Zappone’s Market (the family deli) and also worked at Como Bakery with her husband Joe’s family.

After earning her degree from Post College, she went on to work at several local professional offices in the Greater Waterbury area. In 1987, she encouraged her husband to open Pisani Construction, and shortly thereafter, Pisani Steel Fabrication Inc. and Ferro Development. She worked alongside her husband and father-in-law in these successful enterprises. She diligently and expertly attended to and oversaw the management and office operations of the businesses.

She was a well known and a respected pillar of the community, never seeking nor accepting recognition. One notable project was the new Cross at Holy Land. She worked tirelessly, never hesitating to take an active role in ensuring that this dream became a reality. Today, this beautifully lit Cross can be seen from all of Waterbury, Middlebury and some surrounding towns. MaryJean will be honored with a sculpture dedicated to her loving nature at Naugatuck Valley Community College on Oct. 23, 2018.

She was a member of The Middlebury Republican Town Committee, a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, a justice of the peace, and a notary public. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend. MaryJean will always be remembered for her generosity of spirit, her strength, and beautiful smile.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her husband Joe; sons Joseph and wife, Luisa, of Waterbury and Frank of Middlebury; sister Diana Zappone-Ricciardi and husband, Nick, of Waterbury; her mother-in-law, Mary Pisani, and father-in-law, Frank Pisani; along with many aunts, uncles, several god children, and numerous cousins who she considered more like siblings. Mary Jean cherished her nieces Gabriella and Natalia and nephews Antonio and Alex, whom she loved as though they were her own children.

MaryJean considered herself blessed to be surrounded by countless friends, who she valued dearly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Oct. 15, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 785 Highland Ave. in Waterbury, Conn. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery. The calling hours will be Sunday, Oct. 14, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home at 72 Waterbury Road in Prospect, Conn.

Memorial donations may be made to The Marie and Pat Ciochetti Foundation, 42 Bradley Ave., Waterbury, CT 06708
