Middlebury voters who are registered as Democrats or Republicans may vote in their respective primaries Tuesday, Aug. 14. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Shepardson Community Center at 1172 Whittemore Road in Middlebury. Because Connecticut has what are called “closed” primaries, voting in each primary is limited to voters registered with that primary’s party.
Absentee ballots for both primaries are available in the Middlebury Town Clerk’s office. Electors enrolled in the Democratic Party are eligible to vote in the Democratic Primary. Electors enrolled in the Republican Party are eligible to vote in the Republican Primary.
Applications for an absentee ballot must be filled out before a ballot can be issued; applications are available at the Town Clerk’s office or can be downloaded from the Secretary of the State’s website at www.sots.ct.gov. The town clerk’s office in Town Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Please call 203-758-2557 with any questions.
Town Clerk Edith Salisbury said voters will not only vote depending on their party affiliation; they also will vote in either district one or district two, depending on where in town they live. Salisbury said all district one voters will vote on the lower level of Shepardson Community Center and all district two voters will vote on the upper level of Shepardson Community Center. Voters will be directed to their party’s primary once they arrive on the correct floor for their district.
Democrats will vote on candidates for governor, lieutenant governor, 5th Congressional District, treasurer and attorney general. Choices will be as follows, with an asterisk indicating a candidate is endorsed by the Democratic Party.
