Honor our Veterans

#Middlebury #VeteransDay

It’s Veterans Day – the day we focus on honoring those who have served our country in the Armed Forces. The holiday did not begin as Veterans Day; it was called Armistice Day in 1938 when Congress designated it a legal holiday. Its name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.

The Wikipedia entry for Veterans Day says it coincides with the holidays Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries, “that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect.”

The Wikipedia entry also reminds us not to confuse Veterans Day with Memorial Day. Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans; Memorial Day honors those who died while in military service.
