Middlebury roofing projects to begin

#MIDDLEBURY

Middlebury Public Works Director Dan Norton sent out the following letter (lightly edited by the Bee) regarding the new slate roofs to be installed on Middlebury’s Town Hall and Shepardson Community Center:

As you may know by now, the Board of Selectmen has awarded the slate roof projects at Town Hall and the Shepardson Community Center to Crocker Architectural of North Oxford, Mass. While these jobs seem like a massive undertaking to us here in Middlebury, rest assured that this type of work goes on while buildings are occupied every day, all over the U.S.

Please be patient with us during this construction period and expect your normal daily routine to be a little different for a while. Prepare for the parking to be somewhat limited during this time, especially at Town Hall as Crocker Architectural must have containers and dumpsters positioned around the buildings. We are asking most of the Crocker employees to park offsite, in the field across from Shepardson, in order to try to alleviate some of the congestion in the parking areas during the day but some Crocker vehicles will need to have access to the construction areas.

Make no mistake about it, there will be bumps in the road. This type of construction is a messy process and workers will disrupt the area around these buildings for a while but stay positive because in the end it all will be worth it not to have to deal with continually leaking roofs and broken gutters any more.

Crocker Architectural will begin work Friday. May 12, 2017, by installing a “staging” system around the Shepardson building. This staging is to be put in place in order to provide a safe working platform for their workers and to provide protection for people entering and exiting the buildings during the construction period.

All entrances and exits to the buildings are expected to remain accessible at all times; however, if for some reason there comes a time when one of the exits must be closed temporarily, all of the department heads working in that building will be notified, either personally by someone on site or by email notification like this one, before it is actually closed off. The staging system must remain in place for the entire duration of the job, which is currently scheduled to run until Oct. 1, 2017.
