Middlebury man charged with motor vehicle thefts

Middlebury Police Chief Fran Dabbo said Leonard Ismaili, 30, of Tower Road in Middlebury was arrested Jan. 19 and Feb. 7, 2017, for two separate motor vehicle thefts from the parking lot of a local business. The first theft occurred Dec. 30, 2016, when a 2011 BMW 328XI was reported stolen by its owner, who was in the store making a purchase. The BMW was later recovered in Waterbury by Waterbury Police Department.

The second vehicle, a 2016 Nissan Frontier was taken from the same lot Jan. 10, 2017, at approximately 6:23 p.m. Through reviewing surveillance film and talking to witnesses, police were able to positively  identify Ismaili as the suspect in both thefts.

Ismaili was arrested by warrant on Jan. 19 and charged with first-degree larceny for the theft of the Nissan with a court-set bond of $25,000. He also was charged Jan. 19 as a result of a disturbance at his home Dec. 26, 2016. In that incident he was charged with disorderly conduct and second-degree threatening and bond was set at $1,000. On Feb. 7, he was arrested and charged with second-degree larceny for the theft of the BMW. His bond was court set at $50,000. He is being held pending his appearance in court.
