Middlebury Police Chief Fran Dabbo said a threat directed toward President Trump led to the arrest of a Yuma, Arizona, man on an unrelated charge. On Feb. 1, Middlebury Police Officer Ed Demers received information and a complaint that Joseph Barbieri of Yuma said he wanted to “kill the president.”

Demers provided this information to the Yuma Police, who arrested Barbieri, 53, for a Failure to Appear warrant stemming from a domestic arrest out of Yuma. A Yuma police officer who took the threat complaint discovered the outstanding warrant and Barbieri was subsequently arrested. The U.S. Secret Service was notified and is investigating the threatening incident. It is unknown if Barbieri is still in custody.

Locally, Middlebury officers and the Waterbury Adult Probation Office served a paperless re-arrest warrant on Middlebury resident Kelly Coppola, 29,at her residence on Straits Turnpike on Feb. 2. Coppola was transported and held overnight in the Middlebury Police lockup. She was charged with violation of probation and held on a $10,000 bond pending an appearance in the Waterbury Court.
