MVFD Anniversary

The most exciting Middlebury event this month will likely be the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department’s (MVFD) 75th Anniversary parade today, Saturday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m. The parade will form at Memorial Middle School and march from there down Route 64 (Middlebury Road) to the Tucker Hill Road fire house, where parade participants will be served refreshments. Route 64 between the intersection of routes 63 and 64 and the intersection of routes 64 and 188 (Whittemore Road) will be closed to vehicular traffic from 6 to 7 p.m.

The Middlebury Police Department said in a town-wide telephone alert that spectators can park on the side streets leading into Route 64. We observed “No Parking” signs on Chase Street and part of Tucker Hill Road this morning, but the other streets did not have signs.

MVFD Fire Chief Tony Bruno said a reviewing stand will be set up by Larry’s Fine Wines. He expects dignitaries in the reviewing stand will include State Sen. Rob Kane, State Sen. Joan Hartley, State Rep. Anthony D’Amelio, Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen. Chris Murphy.

The parade will feature 20 or more fire company marching units, bands and fire trucks. At 9:30 p.m., the Connecticut Parade Marshals will announce which companies have won trophies for their performances.
