Team 2064: The Panther Project, the Pomperaug High School (PHS) robotics team, will host the NE FIRST Robotics Connecticut State Championship Saturday, May 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Pomperaug High School. The event is free.

Team 2064 Coach Brian Marganski said, “Hosting an event of this caliber is an honor for the team and the district, and I hope the community will come out and see what all these students have accomplished. You will be impressed.”

The team recently returned from the April 28 to 30 World Robotics Competition in St. Louis with a fourth-place win in their qualifying division. That win allowed them to form an alliance with two other teams to compete in the knock-out rounds. The Panther Project, with alliance members from Illinois and Canada, won their way to the semifinals.

Their success places them among the top 32 high school robotics teams (out of 3000) in the world. Marganski said he was elated at the team’s best performance ever at a robotics event of this level.

Pomperaug Robotics comprises 30 students who work with local businesses for mentor and financial support to compete at this level. The team is given only six weeks to purchase, design, prototype, build, program, test, and train their robot to compete in a new challenge each season.

This program is the only opportunity at PHS for students to be involved firsthand in manufacturing, engineering and business at this level. Students work side by side with professionals and are exposed to real world challenges throughout the year.
