Saturday, Nov. 7, Wendell Deer With Horns, a Native American veteran, will return to Middlebury’s town green for a ceremony honoring veterans. Deer With Horns will erect a tipi starting at 10 a.m., and at noon he and other drummers and dancers will conduct a ceremony of drumming, songs and dancing to bless veterans.

Middlebury Parks and Recreation Director Betty Proulx, herself a Navy veteran, had seen him peform a veterans blessing ceremony at the Oakville American Legion Post 195 and asked him if he would be willing to do the same in Middlebury. “It was something that just impressed me,” Proulx said last year, “and I wanted to share it.” This year, she said the response to the first ceremony was amazing, and she is thrilled Deer With Horns is returning.

Proulx sent invitations to Middlebury veterans, and all are welcome to attend one or both events. In case of rain, the ceremony will move indoors at Shepardson Community Center.
