At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Connecticut state officials said there were 3,128 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31. This is an increase of 557 cases over the 2,571 the day before at 11:30 a.m. The number of confirmed cases in Middlebury increased to 7 from 6.

The groups with the largest number of cases were ages 50 – 59 (665 cases) followed by ages 40 – 49 (536 cases) and ages 30 – 39 (496 cases).

On a graph showing how many people per 100,000 in each age group are testing positive, the three highest rates of positive tests were ages 80 and older (127 cases per 100,000), ages 50 – 59 (126 cases per 100,000), and ages 40 – 49 (122 cases per 100,000).

The report said a state public health lab tested 2,008 patients, and 359, or 18%, of those tested positive. Statewide, more than 15,600 tests have been reported.

On Tuesday, March 31, 608 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized, and 69 had died. The increase in deaths, explained at Gov. Ned Lamont’s March 31 press conference, included 16 deaths over the past 24 hours and 17 “catchup” deaths, deaths that had not been reported to the Department of Public Health over the past two weeks.

Hospitalization numbers were: Fairfield County had 275 (+45) patients, New Haven County had 202 (+26) patients, and Hartford County had 110 (+14) patients. Other counties had 8 or fewer patients.
