Sunday, March 29, 2020, at 5 p.m., this newspaper received a copy of a letter First Selectman Edward B. St. John sent to town employees notifying them a town employee had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. The text of the letter is pasted in below:

March 29, 2020

To the Employees of the Town of Middlebury,

It is unfortunate that I am sending this message to all of you. This is necessary for the safety and health of all employees with the Town of Middlebury. I hope the information in this letter will provide some peace of mind in this rapidly changing situation we are currently in regarding COVID19. Please read the entirety of this message.

We have received confirmation that a town employee has tested positive for COVID19. The following information is important in knowing the level of risk involved.

I will begin by saying the risk to others is very low. The last date this employee was at work was March 13th. The employee was not at work while becoming symptomatic. There has been no contact with this employee since March 13th and we have been advised that an extra week of self-quarantine is conservative but best practice out of concern for all other employees. With this extra week of self-quarantine the employee will have completed twenty three days out of the office and will likely pose no risk when returning to work.

Due to medical privacy laws we are unable to provide any other information at this time. Because we are part of the essential workforce, in order to minimize the spread of this virus, we ask that all employees comply with the social distancing and shelter in place recommendations of the CDC, in and out of the workplace until further notice. We all need to work together to eliminate this as soon as possible. I appreciate everyone’s efforts over the last couple weeks.

We also ask, if you or anyone you come in contact with becomes symptomatic, we ask that you immediately self-quarantine for a minimum of two weeks. Your health and safety and the health and safety of others is of the utmost importance to us.

Sincerely,

Edward St. John (Robin Stanziale)

Edward St. John

First Selectman

Town of Middlebury
