United Way Day of Giving Wednesday, June 21

WATERBURY, Connecticut – Wednesday, June 21, 2017, United Way of Greater Waterbury will rally hundreds of volunteers throughout the community for Day of Action, an annual event that mobilizes the caring power of volunteers to make a meaningful impact in more than 400 communities around the world on the “longest day of the year.” In the 10-town service area of the United Way of Greater Waterbury (Bethlehem, Cheshire, Middlebury, Prospect, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Watertown, Wolcott, and Woodbury), volunteers will participating in the largest Day of Action ever in celebration of the 75th Anniversary year.

The day’s activities include 70+ companies dropping thousands of pounds of food off at the Day of Action hub site at Naugatuck Valley Community College between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., volunteers from 10 companies helping out with manual labor projects at Waterbury partner agencies in a traditional “Day of Caring,” and volunteer readers participating in a literacy project by reading to groups of preschool-age children at libraries throughout the service area and at Waterbury School Readiness sites.

This year’s national focus is on summer learning and nutrition, key elements of the United Way of Greater Waterbury’s Day of Action. Summer is a critical time for children’s academic and physical well-being, but in too many communities kids are falling behind and going hungry during the summer months. Boosting summer learning – and working with schools, summer programs, employers and other nonprofits – is part of United Way’s strategy to help kids succeed in school, work and life.
