Middlebury Fire Marshal Jack Proulx said Jan. 9 that the state fire marshal determined the cause of the Dec. 27 house fire at 165 Whittemore Road was accidental. The state official said the fire started in the middle of the kitchen, where an electric space heater was in operation, most likely underneath a table.

The home’s resident, William Harrison, 65, died of smoke inhalation as a result of the fire, which was reported by a public works employee who was driving by and noticed the house fire about 2:20 p.m.

The Weber family, who lived in the other side of the duplex, was displaced by the fire and has been looking for a rental in Southbury or Middlebury so the family’s children can continue to attend Region 15 schools.
