Selectmen set special town meeting date

The Middlebury Board of Selectmen set Monday, Feb. 2, as the date for a special town meeting, reappointed five people and approved tax rebates at their Tuesday, Jan. 20, meeting.

The special town meeting Monday, Feb. 2, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Shepardson Community Center will be to elect someone to fill the vacancy on the Region 15 Board of Education resulting from Fran Brennan’s Jan. 15 resignation. Middlebury Tax Clerk Brenda Carter is expected to be nominated for the position, but First Selectman Edward B. St. John said nominations also can be made from the floor.

Three people were reappointed to the Beautification Committee for terms from Jan. 6, 2015, through Jan. 5, 2019. They are: Francis L. Barton Jr. (D), Diane M. Mazur (R) and Joanne E. Powell (R).

Peter J. Trinchero (R) was reappointed as an alternate member of the Board of Finance from Jan. 7, 2015, through Jan. 7, 2017, and Oliver R. LeDuc Sr was reappointed as building official from Jan. 24, 2015, through Jan. 24, 2019.

A number of rebates were issued to BMPS LLC and to County Line Buick Nissan. One rebate each was issued to Honda Lease Trust, Raymond Ligouri Jr. and Toyota Motor Credit Corp.

St. John said he didn’t see as many Middlebury residents as he had expected at the Jan. 15 Connecticut Siting Council hearing on the Competitive Power Ventures proposal to build a power plant next to Oxford Airport. “I’ve been to a lot of public hearings,” he said. “You would have expected more people from Oxford in support, but there were only around 10. The town’s (Middlebury’s) position has not changed.” Middlebury opposed the plant in 1999, when the original smaller plant was proposed and opposes the current proposal to build a larger power plant. St. John spoke in opposition to the plant during the public comments segment of the hearing.

The next Board of Selectmen meeting will be Monday, Feb. 2, at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at Shepardson Community Center.
